The LUTUM® 3

We are delighted to announce that in March 2017 the new LUTUM 3D clay printer will be available for the public. We have just revealed the latest working prototype at the Prototyping Expo in Kortrijk the 9th and 10th of November. It’s the natural follow-up on the current LUTUM models and boast updates specifically aimed at the harsh conditions our machines are working in.

They print with Clay, a sticky mostly wet or dusty material that will eventually get into everything. When visiting our current users we found most errors appearing in the operation of the machine are related to the environment they are used in. Potters workshops, material research labs, humid or very dry conditions or places where many different people use the LUTUM.

With the new 3 we hope to tackle most issues and redesigned all moving parts to suit our user’s needs. The electronics are ramped up to 24v, all moving parts are hidden inside heavy powder coated loadbearing structures making them less prone to catch bits of clay hindering their movements.

We have also upgraded the extruder to better cope with the tough clay types that are possible to print with our micro cartridges. Different Augers can now be used for different clay types or viscosities. This allows better performance when using two types of clay and finally takes the dual extrusion out of the experimental stage.

But we are not finished yet, we still need a couple of months to finetune our assembly process and adjust small details to the CNC parts. As you can see in the pictures, the base is largely kept the same. We still use melamine coated birch plywood. And while this prototype is made red we will use the black body for the production models.

Pictured is the first dual material/dual colour print we made. Stoneware clay and grogged high temperature black earthenware. Because we use two cartridges in tandem, it’s possible to change them while the other head is printing. This allows for printing structures larger than possible with a single cartridge. For this example shape we used 4 cartridges printing a total volume of 3 litres of clay in 3 hours. It is 30cm tall and has a line width of around 5mm. Every colour band is 800 cm. long. Totalling around 186 m. of clay extruded.

Until the release in 2017 we have invited several Dutch designers and Ceramists to test and use our machine. We will kick off with Egbert-Jan Lam from Burojet (http://www.burojet.com/), Studio wieki Somers (http://wiekisomers.com/) and Erik Jan Kwakkel (http://dtile.nl/) As soon as we start, the projects can be followed at our website and social pages.

As soon as we have an indication of the numbers we need to produce prices will follow. *UPDATE* prices are set, the new machine will cost €6152,- for the single extruder version.
The LUTUM 3 is standard ready for a second extruder.
cost of the second extruder is €875,-

The current LUTUM models will largely stay in production as some of our users appreciate the open structure and tinker possibilities. The tall MXL and the ‘mini’ have larger build volumes compared to the 3. We made sure the new augers are compatible with the current v6 extruders making our current line capable of printer in higher resolution with tougher or grogged clay as well.
